A Series of Conversations

July 16, 2026
Between now and mid October, on behalf of AME, we will be having three conversations live on line as follows. One with Colonel Arthur Athens (retired marine); one with Steven Spear, co-author of the Harvard Business Review article ‘Decoding the DNA of the Toyota Production System’; one with Pat Geary, President of Story Construction.

Colonel Athens will begin a conversation around ‘Leaders: stay humble and kind … addressing the why and the how’. He will discuss where both attributes fitted in raising 10 children (!) along with the fine balance between kindness and ‘firmness’ as a leader. Colonel Athens will illustrate the immense need for humility and kindness in the leadership role he had with NASA following the Challenger accident.

In 1999 Steven Spear, along with H. Kent Bowen, wrote this groundbreaking article in the Harvard Business Review. The magazine headline was ‘The Toyota story has been intensively researched and painstakingly documented, yet what really happens inside the company remains a mystery. Here’s new insight into the unspoken rules that give Toyota its competitive edge.’

Yes, the insights were new in 1999. But how much notice have we taken of them? Once on the AME website, consider joining this discussion on September 16 (Sep 15 in the US) and decide for yourself. (We will advise once it is on the AME website.)

At the 2020 (February) TWI Summit I (Oscar) sat down for lunch at a table with a senior executive from Story Construction and a construction consultant. (What I didn’t know was that this had been orchestrated.) Within very few minutes of the discussion with Pat Geary and Mike Casten (the construction consultant) I knew I wanted to work with Story. Why? Because first up they spoke of their planning system – driven by high collaboration, low technology. This told me Pat valued people, probably above all else. (Story’s opening page on their website supports this notion.) Second, Pat was not looking for the silver bullet. Pat is now Story Construction President. In our conversation (October 8, Oct 7 in the US) you will hear what Pat believes a President must do if operations are to sustainably deliver value and continually improve. (Again, we will advise once this webinar is on the AME website.)
